CANCELLED The Ockham Society (Thursday - Week 6, TT25)

Ockham Society

Abstract: If you know p, you know q, and from this knowledge, you competently deduce the conjunction p ∧ q, do you know the conjunction p ∧ q? Here’s a dilemma: almost any measure of epistemic support must (i) violate monotonicity or (ii) violate conjunctive closure. After presenting this dilemma, I argue standard conceptions of knowledge must violate conjunctive closure. If you know p, you know q, and you competently deduce from this knowledge the conjunction p ∧ q, it does not follow that you know the conjunction p ∧ q. I discuss the implications for other forms of closure, both in epistemology and beyond.
